Peachepot 1st Anniversary

The Cave closed until October

Peachepot celebrates its first anniversary; Boutique owner extends hours – With the rough economy directly affecting people’s spending habits, Peachepot owner Nora Weinberg wasn’t sure if she was going to make it to the store’s first anniversary.
But on Sept. 1, Weinberg put one candle on the cake.
“I opened the store just when the economy was tanking. It was a difficult year to anticipate sales and by mid-way through the first year, I didn’t think I was going to make it,” Weinberg said, adding that sales started to increase by spring.
Weinberg said she had to adjust the price points for the merchandise because she opened the women’s boutique, which has a customer base of girls and women from 15 to 45-years-old, with merchandise that was priced too high. “Now, most of the clothes are under $20, which is good for the high school girls,” she said. Since 2004 the Cave has been happening weekdays after school, as a free place for young teens and pre-teens to enjoy recreation, socializing, and homework help. Run by the nonprofit organization Who Is My Neighbor? Inc. the Cave has served Downtown Highland Park for many years.
This year, however, The Cave has had to postpone opening. Charities such as Who Is My Neighbor have been hit hard by the nation’s weak economy; typical sources of grants to operate the Cave came up short. But a campaign is on to raise the shortfall and open the Cave by October 1st. Residents and businesses that see the Cave’s benefit to the entire community are already stepping up to assure that it may continue to offer 6th through 9th graders, from public, private, and home school, a good place to relax, play ping pong, eat a free healthy snack, or use the computer lab, under the supervision of caring adult volunteers.
